    • More about Essex

It has one city, the county town of Chelmsford, but it also contains other large towns including Colchester which in Roman times was the capital of Roman Britain. There is also a large area of coastal landscape with a number of resorts such as Southend and Clacton as well as wilder and more scenic areas and as a consequence sailing and boating are very popular pastimes in Essex. The southern part of Essex has become famous on TV as the home of the reality TV series TOWIE – The Only Way Is Essex!

      • Getting around

Essex is a popular place to live for teachers as it tends to be much less expensive than the inner London boroughs and yet it is very easy to travel into the centre of London. Trains into London Liverpool Street from Chelmsford take 35 minutes – much faster than a lot of tube journeys across London.  The far south of Essex is already well served by the c2c line to Tilbury.  The newly built Elizabeth Line is due to start service in 2018 and this will make south Essex even more accessible and popular with easy rail journeys across London from Romford and Brentwood and even out as far as Shenfield.  London Transport makes finding and planning routes and booking journeys very simple and the National Rail website is excellent for rail journeys.  It is worth remembering that for all journeys using public transport in the London area the cheapest option is to use an ‘Oyster’ card (available from stations and many shops) or a contactless bank card.

      • One of the three main London airports, Stansted Airport, is sited here.  The airport is easy to reach from London by train on the Stansted Express and there is also a motorway – the M11 – that goes straight from north east London.

In the south, there is City Airport near Canary Wharf with rapid links using the forthcoming Elizabeth Line and the DLR:  it is easy to fly from there to destinations all over Europe and in the UK.

Finally, the Eurostar rail service to Europe is close by at London St Pancras making it very easy to visit destinations in western Europe by train. From London, you could be in Paris in 2hrs 25m!
